What happened Saturday

Pennsylvania tornadoes

The first Pennsylvania tornado touched down at 2016 UTC (4:16 PM EDT) approximately 3 miles south-southwest of Summerville in Jefferson County. Video posted to social media captured the tornado south of the town, according to the National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh (PBZ).

A second tornado was confirmed at 2056 UTC (4:56 PM EDT) about 2 miles north-northeast of Mcchesneytown-Loy, also in western Pennsylvania. A storm chaser documented a rotating condensation funnel in contact with the ground along Stewarts Road. The National Weather Service estimated the time from radar data.

No EF ratings have been assigned to either tornado as of this writing. Both events occurred as the cold front moved through the region, supported by a very moist airmass and steepened low-level lapse rates that fueled strong downdrafts and rotating cells.

Texas landspout

A landspout tornado formed at 2203 UTC (5:03 PM CDT) approximately 3 miles north-northeast of Lorenzo in Crosby County, Texas. A photograph captured the narrow funnel just northeast of town. The National Weather Service office in Lubbock (LUB) reported the landspout lasted 3 to 4 minutes before dissipating. The location was estimated from the photograph and radar analysis.

Landspouts are tornadoes that form along boundaries beneath developing thunderstorms, typically weaker and shorter-lived than supercell tornadoes. They often occur in the High Plains during the summer months when strong heating and moisture convergence create localized spin along outflow boundaries or dry lines.

The wind event

Saturday's 443 wind reports made this one of the most significant damaging-wind days of the 2026 severe weather season to date. The reports began in Pennsylvania before 1300 UTC (9:00 AM EDT) and continued into the overnight hours as storms tracked east and southeast.

The National Weather Service documented widespread tree and power-line damage across the Mid-Atlantic, with particularly dense clusters of reports in:

  • Pennsylvania: Trees blocked roadways on Route 26 near Entriken, Route 219 near Boswell, and Lambs Gap Road near Wertzville. Multiple reports cited trees down on wires.
  • North Carolina: A tree blocked I-85 near Gate Road in southern Granville County. Trees and utility lines caused power outages near Hendersonville.
  • Michigan: Tuscola County dispatch reported a power pole down on Saginaw Road and a large tree blocking State Road between Vassar and Millington.

The Storm Prediction Center's Day 1 outlook had highlighted the potential for scattered damaging wind gusts across the Southeast and severe wind gusts in the Upper Midwest, driven by water-loading within strong downdrafts and upscale growth of convective clusters.

Hail and additional hazards

Five hail reports were logged Saturday, including:

  • 1.25-inch hail in Victor, New York, at 1930 UTC
  • 1-inch hail near Dysartsville, North Carolina, at 1827 UTC and 1830 UTC
  • 1-inch hail in Farmville, Virginia, at 2037 UTC
  • 1-inch hail 6 miles west-northwest of Ledger, Montana, shortly after midnight UTC

The hail remained below severe criteria in most locations, though the Victor report reached significant size for summertime convection in the Northeast.

Why this outbreak was widespread

Saturday's severe weather was driven by a seasonably strong cold front interacting with a very moist airmass. Morning soundings showed 14 to 15 grams per kilogram of moisture in the lowest 100 millibars across Virginia and the southern Appalachians—high precipitable water values that supported heavy rain and strong downdrafts.

Slightly stronger westerly flow over Virginia and northern North Carolina allowed storm clusters to track eastward through the afternoon. Water-loading within the downdrafts produced widespread wind gusts in the 50 to 60 mph range, with some gusts likely exceeding that threshold based on the damage reports.

Farther west, a mid-level trough moving east-southeast from Alberta into Manitoba helped trigger storms across the Dakotas and Minnesota. Deep boundary-layer mixing and effective shear around 40 knots supported initial supercell development, with some storms later merging into linear clusters capable of severe wind.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued an Enhanced Risk for portions of the Great Lakes and Southeast on Sunday, July 19, with another Enhanced Risk forecast for the Ohio Valley and Northeast on Monday, July 20. The active pattern that produced Saturday's widespread severe weather is expected to continue as additional frontal systems move through the eastern United States.
